Energy efficient safety and security tips for your commercial property

Energy efficient safety and security tips for your commercial property

Being energy efficient doesn’t have to come at the expense of security – nor should it ever have to. A perfect example of an energy efficient security solution is the automatic locking doors that some high-end jewellers and pawn brokers use. These lock to prevent unauthorised people from entering, and they help to prevent heat loss too.

Of course, such a solution might not be practical for your commercial property. So, here’s some alternative energy-efficient security systems that you might like to consider:

Wireless alarm systems

Wireless alarm systems are powered by batteries. Pound-for-pound, they are more expensive than their wired counterparts but they run off the grid. This means that they won’t eat into your monthly electricity bill and they could reduce your carbon footprint.

We have already written about the reliability of wireless alarms, so in a nutshell we’ll say that they are just as dependable as wired systems so long as you remember to change out or recharge the batteries periodically. Most of these systems also have the option for wired connectivity too, so if you intend to leave your premises unoccupied, you can.

Battery-powered CCTV cameras

Battery-powered CCTV cameras have a huge security benefit over their wired counterparts – the power supply can’t be cut off. In addition to this, battery-powered CCTV camera systems will last for several weeks with the original batteries supplied.

As with wireless alarm systems, battery-powered CCTV cameras run off the grid and either run off replaceable batteries or have rechargeable batteries. The best option is a system with rechargeable batteries, since you can buy spares and have them ready to install, which will reduce potential downtime and improve the security of your property.

LED exterior security lighting

We recommend exterior security lighting with a PIR movement sensor, so that it automatically activates when it detects movement. This saves energy, and combined with an LED light source, means that your exterior security lighting will cost peanuts to run.

Security lighting is an important consideration for any commercial premises. At night, criminals have been known to visit a building up to three times to assess its security features before deciding whether to rob it. Security lighting ensures that people who don’t want to be seen don’t get too close to your property. Security lighting with a PIR movement sensor can be installed all around your property for complete coverage.
