What is colour tuned lighting and how can it benefit my business?

Colour tuned lighting is a relatively new phenomenon that was borne from sound scientific research. Research has shown that blue light, which is emitted most commonly from electronic devices and fluorescent light bulbs, can affect sleep and concentration.

Some LED bulbs are also known for this, because they generate white light using blue LEDs that are coated in a special compound that emits a longer wavelength when illuminated.

A colour tuned light bulb, such as the Philips Hue, uses red, green and blue LEDs to generate white light. By using different coloured LEDs, it is possible to adjust the light source itself so that very little blue light is emitted at all.

The benefit to this is that people exposed to the light aren’t as affected by it. For instance, a red-rich light source puts less strain on the conscious vision system, reducing tiredness and eye strain and is perfect for later in the day. A yellow-rich light source, meanwhile, has been shown to improve short-term concentration.

The point of all this for employers is simple: Colour tuned lighting has the potential to improve alertness and concentration among employees. But most of all, by reducing the amount of blue light employees are exposed to, this could improve their sleep. In turn, this could improve performance, since a good night’s sleep is such as important element of this.

How does colour-tuned lighting work?

The most popular colour tuned lighting product is the Philips Hue. This system has a wireless hub that connects to the Philips light bulbs. This allows you to control the light bulbs individually from a mobile device, such as a smartphone.

Using such a system is child’s play. The system can be controlled from a smartphone or tablet, and there are also dimmer switches available for walls. The system can also be used remotely away from the office. All you need is an internet connection.

Alternative products use the same system, and in cases, they work out cheaper, since the Philips Hue is a premium option. We can install colour tuned lighting in your offices and workspaces to improve productivity. The products we install offer warm dimming, tuneable white light and full colour tuning if that’s what you desire. So, for example, we can install kits that allow you to bathe offices in green, blue, red and yellow light.
